Killyleagh: Teenager dies in County Down collision
An 18-year-old man has died in a two-vehicle collision near Killyleagh in County Down.
The crash happened in the Coily Hill Road area shortly after midnight on Monday.
The teenager was a passenger in one of the two vehicles involved in the collision.
Six other young people, four males and two females, were injured in the accident and taken to hospital. Police have appealed for witnesses.
The ambulance service said they were called shortly after midnight and sent a doctor, a hazardous area response team, a rapid response paramedic and six emergency crews to the scene.
Six people were taken to hospital – three to the Royal Victoria Hospital, one to the Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children and two to the Ulster Hospital.
Kathryn Owen, a DUP councillor from Newry, Mourne and Down Council, said it was a very difficult time for all the families.
“Certainly in the middle of this crisis, they aren’t going to be able to get in to see them in the hospital,” she said.
“That is going to be heartbreaking. Naturally, every parent would want to be at the bedside of their child.
“It is a terrible situation for those poor parents to be in and it is up to us, as a community, to rally around them and try and give them as much support as possible.”
